Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that can benefit people of all fitness levels and ages, and can easily be done at home with zero equipment! It can help improve overall physical fitness, mental well-being, and quality of life.
Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles, our “powerhouse” , targeting the deep core muscles, including the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, and multifidus muscles that stabilize the vertebrae as your spine moves. Strengthening these muscles can improve stability and support for the spine and pelvis. But Pilates is so much more!!! It also improves flexibility, posture, balance and coordination, enhances greater body awareness, and even reduces stress!
Pilates is also an awesome workout for beginners, too! And if you are just starting on your exercise journey, here are the key reasons why Pilates is a great place to begin:
- Low impact: Pilates exercises are low impact, meaning they are easy on the joints and are less likely to cause injury compared to high-impact exercises such as running or jumping.
- Controlled movements: Pilates exercises are slow, controlled movements that allow beginners to focus on proper form and technique, which is important for preventing injury and building a strong foundation for more advanced exercises.
- Emphasis on core strength: Pilates exercises emphasize core strength, which is important for overall physical fitness and everyday activities. Strengthening the core muscles can also help improve posture and reduce the risk of back pain.
- Adaptability: Pilates exercises can be modified to suit individual needs and fitness levels, making it an ideal workout for beginners who may need to start with simpler exercises and gradually increase intensity and difficulty. It is also a great workout to do in the convenience of your own home!
- Focus on mind-body connection: Pilates exercises focus on mind-body connection, which can help beginners develop a better awareness of their body and movement patterns. This can be especially helpful for those who are new to exercise or may have a history of injury.
With regular practice, beginners can gradually build their skills and progress to more advanced exercises. An added bonus is that Pilates can often times be a springboard to incorporating other forms of movement or activities into your fitness routine. I find that many of my clients want to cross train and add in other activities like strength training , cardio, HIIT or yoga, just to name a few. I love Pilates for the mind-body connection and the confidence that comes along with it, and it is one of my favorite formats to teach!
