You look forward to vacation all year and rightly so! It is so nice to have a fun getaway to plan and look forward to. But sometimes leaving our usual health routine can bring mixed feelings – you want to (and definitely should!) enjoy yourself but at the same time, you want to stay somewhat on track with your health goals and come back feeling energized and positive! Although staying on track during vacation can be challenging, with a little planning and mindful decision-making, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle even while enjoying your time away. Here are some tips to help you stay on track during vacation:

  1. De-stress: Vacation is one of the best ways to destress and relax! Whether a weekend getaway or a longer adventure, you are doing a great service for your body, mind and spirit! Stress management is often hard when we are in our regular routine of work, family, errands, etc. So, enjoy reading that book, casual walks on the beach, or getting a massage, etc – you will be seriously lowering your cortisol levels and will feel refreshed and relaxed! Take it in!
  2. Plan ahead: Before you leave, research the destination for healthy food options and fitness facilities. Look for restaurants that offer nutritious choices or grocery stores where you can purchase healthy snacks and ingredients. If possible, book accommodations with access to a kitchenette so you can prepare some of your own meals.
  3. Pack healthy snacks: If doable, bring along some of your favorite, nutritious go-to snacks or protein drink mixes, Having healthy snacks on hand can help you avoid reaching for less healthy options when hunger strikes. This is especially helpful if you are eating at different times, like having dinner later, etc.
  4. Stay active: Explore your vacation destination by walking or biking instead of relying solely on transportation. Engage in activities that involve physical movement, such as swimming, hiking, or exploring local attractions on foot, maybe take a guided hike or tour, and consider trying out new activities that allow you to stay active and have fun at the same time. Or if you have a favorite travel fitness loop/band to bring along or go-to workout, bring it and enjoy a workout outdoors or in the resort gym!
  5. Practice portion control and moderation: Enjoy the local cuisine and indulge in occasional treats, but be mindful of portion sizes. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and avoid overeating. Consider sharing meals or ordering smaller portions to help control your calorie intake. Choose treats wisely and savor them mindfully. Instead of completely depriving yourself, allow yourself these smaller portions to satisfy cravings.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. It can help you feel more satisfied, reduce cravings, and support overall well-being. This is especially important if you are going to a warmer climate or have long travel days.
  7. Make smart food choices: Opt for balanced meals that include lean proteins, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables to ensure you’re getting a variety of nutrients. Be cautious of excessive consumption of sugary drinks, alcoholic beverages, or high-calorie desserts.
  8. Prioritize sleep: Aim to maintain a somewhat regular sleep schedule while on vacation. Adequate sleep will help you feel more energized, make better food choices, and maintain overall well-being.
  9. Practice self-compassion: Remember that vacations are meant to be enjoyed and provide a break from your usual routine. If you deviate from your healthy habits occasionally, be kind to yourself and avoid guilt or self-judgment. Focus on making balanced choices whenever possible and get back on track once you return home.

By implementing these strategies, and focusing on all the positives that vacation can bring (de stressing, exploring and trying new things and foods, enjoying a chance to relax and unwind, etc ..) you can find a balance between enjoying your vacation and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Remember, the key is to be mindful, make conscious choices, and prioritize your well-being while still having a great time.
